Trapped awarded 2017 Silver Gavel Award for Media and the Arts

Trapped - recipient of 2017 Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the ArtsWASHINGTON, May 10, 2017 —The American Bar Association today announced its selections for the 2017 Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts, which recognize outstanding work that fosters the American public’s understanding of law and the legal system. This is the ABA’s highest honor in recognition of this purpose. 
Work focusing on eviction, the militarization of policing, understanding landmark U.S. Supreme Court decisions, and challenges in federal courts to state laws regulating abortion providers took top honors.

“Trapped,” a television documentary that probes the impact of state TRAP (Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers) statutes on reproductive health clinic workers and relates how they and their lawyers challenged these laws in federal court (Whole Woman’s Health V. Hellerstedt).

We are THRILLED and HONORED to be awarded the prestigious Peabody Award for Trapped! Peabody Awards honor mediamakers who are telling stories that matter. Among 1200 entries, Trapped has been named a recipient of this year’s prize in documentary film. The Awards Committee noted, “The film provides an honest look at the effects of anti-choice legislation, exposing how regulations passed under the guise of safety end up harming women, many of them poor and of color.”

For years, women’s health rights in the U.S. have been steadily eroding, in large part due to restrictive laws passed by conservative state governments regulating abortion clinics, known as TRAP laws (Targeted Regulations of Abortion Providers), particularly in the South. While cloaked in faux concern for women’s health on the part of legislators, these laws are in fact are so onerous to service providers that many cannot afford to make the accommodations necessary to stay in business.

With the Supreme Court’s hearing of a challenge to a 2013 Texas law imposing stringent requirements on abortion providers comes Dawn Porter’s “Trapped,” the winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Social Impact Filmmaking and an urgent, vital examination of Southern abortion clinics. The film’s subjects face so-called TRAP laws (the letters stand for targeted regulation of abortion providers), whose critics say aim to close clinics or reduce their number by placing unaffordable or unfeasible demands on them.
